We all experience anxiety to some degree during our daily lives. People feel anxious before an exam, a job interview or making an important decision and that is completely normal. However, some people struggle to shrug off anxiety to the extent that they become unable to function in their daily activities. Very often the symptoms of an anxiety disorder can interfere with performance at work or school and also disrupt close personal relationships.
There are different types of anxiety disorders that are broadly categorized into three groups: generalized anxiety, panic and phobia-related disorders. Here we take a closer look at each category:
Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD): People who have GAD experience extreme anxiety for most days over a period of at least six months. The kinds of things triggering the condition include issues surrounding personal health, social life, career and general life circumstances. The symptoms of GAD include: restlessness, irritability, fatigue, lack of focus, muscle tension, uncontrollable feelings of worry, insomnia.
Panic Disorder: Panic disorder is characterized by attacks that can be so severe the person experiences chest pains, shortness of breath, trembling and muscle tension. There is usually a trigger for a panic attack which can be related to a previous traumatic experience or situation.
Phobia-related disorders: When someone has a phobia, they have an irrational fear of something which can be any object or situation. Individuals with a phobia-related disorder will take any necessary steps to avoid the situation or object they fear. If they encounter the object or find themselves in the trigger situation, someone with a phobia-related disorder is likely to react in an extreme way very quickly.
